Williams Scholarship Applications Available

The Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship Committee and the Mattoon Area Community Foundation is pleased to announce that nomination forms for the 2010 scholarship are available. Scholarship nominees must be a senior in high school or graduate student in good standing at the college level at the time of the award and be majoring in the field of finance, banking, accounting, economics or computer sciences. The nominee must be a graduate of Mattoon Senior High School and exhibit high qualities of character to be worthy of the award.

The scholarship was created to honor the memory of the late Arland D. Williams, Jr. Mr. Williams grew up in Mattoon and was a national hero of an airplane crash in Washington D.C. in 1982. The Arland D.Williams, Jr. Scholarship Fund was established in May 1983 by Mrs. Virginia Williams, mother of Arland D. Williams, Jr. The original fund value was $10,100 in 1983. Since 1985, 25 scholarships have been awarded for a total of over $56,000. The Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship Fund is managed by the Mattoon Area Community Foundation along with 12 other funds to benefit the community. The 2009 recipient of the Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship was Christopher Wente, who is a senior at the University of Kentucky.

Nomination forms can be found on the community foundation’s Website or by contacting Amanda Standerfer, Program Director for the community foundation, at astanderfer@enrichingourcommunity.org. Completed nomination forms must be returned to the community foundation by Friday, March 19, 2010. The award is announced at a luncheon honoring the recipient in August.
