Consolidated Communications recently awarded a $6,000 grant to the Mattoon Foundation for Academic Excellence (MFAE) from the company’s Earning For Learning program.

In 2015, MFAE awarded $23,475 in grants for several projects in the district, including funding for Mattoon High School’s B.I.O.N.I.C. mentoring program and MobyMax tablets that feature curriculum-based software for Williams Elementary School. Other funds were granted to improve and enhance classroom learning throughout the district. MFAE is a charitable fund managed by the Mattoon Area Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation, committed to promoting, enhancing and assisting in funding projects, capital expenditures or other creative ideas which support, encourage, and promote academic excellence for students of Community Unit District No. 2.

Sarah Greider of Consolidated Communications said Mattoon schools and the foundation have received more than $580,000 from the EFL program since 1993. “Our Earning for Learning grants are designed to support education in the communities we serve, and we are pleased to continue this tradition of helping our local schools,” Greider said.

The EFL program has donated more than $3.3 million to local schools to use for teacher grants, computer and software purchase and other items and projects not included in typical school budgets. Participating schools are invited to submit a grant application to request funds for a specific financial need. Grants are approved based on the description of need and funds available at the time of the request.
