David Janssen, chair of Mattoon High School Alumni Scholarship fund advisory committee, recently announced their goal to raise $50,000 to establish the Angela McQueen Citizenship Award. On Thursday, March 22, residents of Mattoon and surrounding communities will have an opportunity to show their gratitude for the unselfish actions of MHS teacher Angela McQueen on September 20, by participating in the 24-hour day of giving. “Making a small donation to this scholarship is the most direct way to benefit those that Angela feels most passionately about — our students,” said Janssen.
Through social media and email outreach, alumni and community members will come together on March 22 in a unique way by contributing to the Mattoon High School Alumni Scholarship Endowment. Every gift on this day makes a direct impact, creating an opportunity for students who may not be able to consider a college education without a scholarship while, at the same time, honoring one of our finest hometown heroes!
The Angela McQueen Citizenship Award will be presented every year to a graduate of Mattoon High School to defray the cost of post-secondary education. Other named scholarships given from the Mattoon High School Alumni Scholarship Endowment include Florence Parker, Carl Etchason, First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust, and the Helen K. Janssen Family.
Contributions to the Angela McQueen Citizenship Award can be made online (www.enrichingourcommunity.org/McQueen), by phone (217.342.4988) or in-person at the Cromwell Radio office (209 Lake Land Blvd, Mattoon). Tune in live to 101.3 WMCI, 104.3 the Party, Classic Rock 92.1 the Axe and Victory 103.9 for updates and giveaways throughout the day. The fund advisory committee thanks the following prize sponsors for their support: Pilson Auto Center, 19th Street DQ Grill & Chill, Bourbon Street Steakhouse, Exhale Studios, DeBuhr’s Feed & Seed, Cracker Barrel, KC Summers, Villa Pizza, Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, Holiday Inn Express & Suites, Jackie Metzger — Lula Roe Consultant, Rural King, and Olive Garden.
