Two Mattoon High School Seniors Receive Mike James Memorial Scholarships

Chris Dyer (left) and Derek Pierce (right) are the 2014 recipients of the Mike James Memorial Scholarship and were presented the award during Mattoon High School Honor’s Night.

Chris is the son of Dawn and the late Matthew Dyer of Mattoon. He will be attending Lake Land College in the fall and will be pursuing a degree in Building and Construction Technology. He will receive a $1,000 scholarship over the course of the next 2 years.

Derek is the son of Kevin and Cheri Pierce of Mattoon. He will be attending Eastern Illinois University in the fall and will be pursuing a degree in finance. He will receive a $2,000 scholarship over the course of the next 4 years.

The Mike James Memorial scholarship is one of several scholarships administered by the Mattoon Area Community Foundation. The scholarship fund was established in 2002 by Mattoon resident, Lorri James in honor of her late husband.

The scholarship is awarded to a MHS Senior football player and the recipients are voted on by a selection committee each year.
