Stan McMorris and the Thomas Lincoln Cemetery Association have been awarded a $2,000 grant from the Mattoon Area Community Foundation CommunityWorks Fund to install a war memorial on the cemetery grounds.
The cemetery, located in Lerna near the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site, was sold out of grave spaces and genuinely in need of more land. Ten acres of land was generously donated by Gale Baker who had lived in the area and who’s family has ties to the cemetery. Gale’s only stipulation on the land donation was that a war memorial be built at the cemetery to honor soldiers buried there.
