The Effingham County Community Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2009 Delbert and Maradyl Facklam Scholarship will be awarded to Beth Kreke of Teutopolis. Ms. Kreke is a senior at Teutopolis High School and is ranked 6th in her class. She has a GPA of 4.07. She plans to attend Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville in the fall to study nursing. Ms. Kreke plans to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. She is a long-time volunteer of ARC Community Support systems and is the daughter of Ted and Patty Kreke. Ms. Kreke will receive an $800 scholarship.
The Delbert and Maradyl Facklam Scholarship is one of the several scholarships administered by the Effingham County Community Foundation. The scholarship was established by Mr. Delbert Eugene Facklam, who was born on December 18, 1920 in Prairie Township (2 miles south of Stewardson) in Shelby County, Illinois. On October 6 1939 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Effingham. On December 7, 1941 he met his first and only housemate, his wife, Maradyl, who is now deceased. Mr. Facklam currently resides in Redwood Valley, California.
To qualify for the Delbert and Maradyl Facklam Scholarship, applications must be continuing his/her education in a college or university, demonstrate financial need, intend to give back to his/her community and be a Teutopolis High School graduating senior. The scholarship was announced at the Teutopolis Awards Night, which was held on May 20, 2009.
